Mark Sublette, Curator & author

Wyoming was on Maynard Dixon’s bucket list. In 1938, Dixon realized his dream to paint the Cowboy state with its open vistas and wild back country. Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery once again will recognize Dixon’s journey by featuring selections from the Maynard Dixon Museum in September 12-15, at the Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair. This awe-inspiring and memorable exhibit will include fifty significant works by Maynard Dixon, including original oils, drawings, watercolors, poems, and Dixon’s easel.

The exhibition will feature Dixon’s social-realist paintings, including the study for “Shapes of Fear,” one of Dixon’s most important works; the oil resides in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection.

About Maynard Dixon ( 1875-1946)

Maynard Dixon is considered by many art collectors to be the premier artist of the West. His ability to capture the land and its inhabitants, in a non-judgmental and honest way, have left an indelible legacy. The people Maynard Dixon depicted in his paintings reflect the cultural mix of the American West of the early 20th century. He was delighted to live among the peoples of the region, and his portrayals of the Hispanic, Native American and Angelo inhabitants are without comparison during his remarkable 50 year career.

The artist’s works can be found in the public collections of leading museums nationwide, including, Dallas Museum of Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, National Museum of Art in DC, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Autry Museum of Western Heritage, in L.A., Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Crocker Art Museum, in Sacramento, San Diego Museum of Art, Springville Museum of Art in Utah, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Oklahoma and the National Museum of Wildlife Art (Jackson).
